- Toolbox talks are also included to encourage team discussions around safety scenarios, using examples from the microlearning course series.
Background
Key to Mpact’s mission to reduce waste and promote sustainability across South Africa is the cultivation of a health and safety culture, rooted in the development of its people.
Mpact, a leading South African company in paper and plastics packaging, focuses on sustainable practices and produces packaging for multiple industries.
In 2019, Thrive Wellness Hub, led by Ashley Galliard, took charge of developing a comprehensive digital learning strategy, starting with a needs analysis and the establishment of an LMS. Currently, Skill Order manages the strategic and development aspects of this program, and while it addresses a diverse range of educational needs, health and safety development, driven through the digital learning program remains a top priority.

Purpose
Mission Zero

The project aims to accelerate the shift in the company’s health and safety culture. An attitude of mere compliance with health and safety regulations is steadily shifting towards a culture that embraces health and safety, characterised by a sense of responsibility, pride, self-respect, and respect for colleagues. This cultural transformation is essential for achieving the company’s goal of ZERO incidents, whilst enhancing productivity. To this end, health and safety is a key performance indicator, linked to overall job performance.
The workforce primarily consists of young males with limited computer skills but proficient smartphone usage, a key consideration in the program design.
Key Considerations

The success of the Fire and Safety micro-learning project relies on the analysis, understanding, and planned evaluation of key areas, including:
- Defining a health and safety culture – what does it look like?
- Identifying behavior changes indicative of cultural shifts and measuring these changes.
- Course design must be accessible and effective in promoting the desired behaviors among the target audience, and…
- Evaluation methods needed to be established to measure success
Strategy
Revolutionize Safety Training with Our Micro-Courses!
The strategy aims to:-
- Unlock seamless learning with our smartphone-accessible micro-courses, designed to break down tech barriers and engage everyone.
- Tap into familiar resources like the Fire and Safety Cartoon series featuring Sam the Mongoose. These micro-courses connect to existing content, deepening your theoretical knowledge.
- Engage learners through bite-sized segments, just five minutes long, that zero in on a single safety rule. Learners enjoy dynamic video explanations by Sam, then dive into scenario-based applications to put their skills to the test.
Below is a demo of an engaging interactive resource of the Fire and Safety Cartoon Series. This is for demo purposes only, and so some functionality has been removed. Click “Start.”
Evaluation
Evaluation of the program is ongoing, encompassing short, medium, and long-term perspectives.
- Short term: Immediate feedback from scenario responses helps identify current attitudes and knowledge gaps. In addition, LX and UX feedback is obtained after the course is completed. Below is a demo questionnaire, indicative of the type of feedback we’ve obtained.
- Medium-term assessments involve measuring employee performance against health and safety KPIs.
- Long-term evaluations focus on tracking incident patterns in relation to training completion.
Early evaluations indicate promising results, suggesting effective progress in growing the safety culture.
